Race Rules

Each LAWSKI entry is subject to the following Rules.

The Lawyers Team Race (“Team Race”), the Lawyers Individual Ski Race (“Ski Race”) and the Lawyers Individual Snowboard Race (“Snowboard Race”) (together, the “Races”) and the official LAWSKI social functions (together with the Races, the “Event”) are organised by LAWSKI Inc. (Y2463619) and Kosciuszko Thredbo Pty Limited (ABN 95 000 139 015).

  1. (Race Entry Requirements)  Each racer must be one of the following:

    • a person who has been admitted to practice as a legal practitioner; or

    • a Judge, Master or other judicial officer; or

    • a paralegal or other person who has either completed or is presently undertaking a law degree or legal diploma course, and who is in regular employment with a law firm; or

    • a person admitted to the event by the Rules Committee.

  2. (Race Procedure)  There will be a single competition for the 3 Races in the form of a dual slalom.  It will be run in strict order according to the bib numbers and any racer not ready to race at the start when his/her bib number is called will not be permitted to start that run and will be credited with a “did not start” in respect of that run.  Provided that they are present when their bib number is called, each racer will be given two runs, even if the racer is disqualified or does not finish his/her first run.

  3. (Category Requirements)

    • The competition is open to persons on skis or a snowboard.  It is not open to persons on mono skis

    • The Team Race is open to persons on skis or snowboards.  The Team Race is not a separate race; the results are determined by using a team’s aggregate times from the competition calculated in accordance with rule 6.

    • The Ski Race is open to persons on skis only.  The Ski Race is not a separate race; the results are determined by using a racer’s individual times from the competition.

    • The Snowboard Race is open to persons on snowboards only.  The Snowboard Race is not a separate race; the results are determined by using a racer’s individual times from the competition.

    • A participant must indicate on the entry form whether his or her participation in the competition will be on skis or a snowboard.

  4. (Divisions and Draw)

    • The race will comprise two divisions, Division A and Division

    • Division A will comprise all the “A” non-composite teams, “A” composite teams and “A” individual racers as seeded by the Rules Committee.  Division B will comprise all the other teams and individual racers.

    • The race order will be drawn randomly, with each of the Division A racers given a consecutive race number and each of the Division B racers given a consecutive race number.

  5. (Race Order)  The order of racing will be as follows:

    • Division A racers, consecutively through the red course or the blue course (eg team/racer 1 through red and team/racer 2 through blue, etc);

    • Division B racers, consecutively through the red course or the blue course;

    • Division A racers, in reverse consecutive order through the other course (eg the last team/racer through red would be the first team/racer through blue and the last team/racer through blue would be the first team/racer through red, etc); and

    • Division B racers, in reverse consecutive order through the other course.

  6. (Team Race)  For the Team Race:

    • each team must have a minimum of 3 racers and a maximum of 4 racers;

    • where a firm (which for the purposes of these Rules includes a company, organisation, government agency or other entity entering a team) or set of chambers has more than one team, the “A” team must have 4 racers and the other teams may consist of 3 or 4 racers;

    • only teams made up entirely of racers from the same firm or the same set of chambers (e.g. Selborne Chambers, Wentworth Chambers, etc) (“non-composite teams”) are eligible for the Championship Trophy;

    • only teams made up of racers from, or associated with, different firms or sets of chambers (“composite teams”) are eligible for the composite teams event prize; and

    • subject to no disqualifications being recorded, to qualify for the Championship Trophy or the composite teams event prize, a team must have at least 6 finishing times.  The fastest 6 times for each qualifying team will be added to give the total team time.  If a team has 5 or less finishing times, it will not qualify for the Championship Trophy or the composite teams event prize.

  7. (Ski Race Winners)  Subject to no disqualifications being recorded, for the Ski Race there will be a men’s and a women’s individual race winner.  Each winner will be the racer with the lowest aggregate finishing time for the two runs.

  8. (Snowboard Race Winners)  Subject to no disqualifications being recorded, for the Snowboard Race there will be a men’s and a women’s individual race winner.  Each winner will be the racer with the lowest aggregate finishing time for the two runs.

  9. (Prize Allocation)  If, in the allocation of prizes to a winner, a racer would otherwise be entitled to receive two pairs of skis/two snowboards/a pair of skis and a snowboard, the racer is only entitled to receive one such prize (to his/her choice), and the other prize may be awarded in the absolute discretion of the Rules Committee.

  10. (Rules Committee) The Rules Committee will consist of Morgan Campbell, Raphael Perla and Kristie Steggles (the “Rules Committee“).  A member of the Rules Committee will not participate in any decision involving him/her or any member of his/her firm or chambers, or in any decision where he/she could stand to gain or lose a prize or placing as a result of the decision.  If necessary, Raphael Perla will have the casting vote.  Any decision of the Rules Committee will be final.

  11. (Varying the Race) The Rules Committee expressly reserves the right, in its absolute discretion, to change a Race format or to vary the conduct of a Race in any way (e.g. to a single run event or to a single slalom) in the event that it considers that weather or snow conditions, or other factors, warrant such a decision.

  12. (Prizes) The awarding of all other forms of participation prizes (including prizes for best fall and door and auction prizes) (each a “Door Prize”) in connection with the Event is in the absolute discretion of the Organising Committee of Lawyers Ski Race Inc.  Each participant (including a guest) must sign the LAWSKI Waiver to be eligible for a Door Prize.  Any decision of the Organising Committee in respect of the awarding of a Door Prize will be final.

  13. (Varying the Rules) These Rules may be varied at any time by the Rules Committee.

If you wish to participate, you must agree to these Rules and the LAWSKI Waiver.
